Day six brought the final. The venue shifted from ELTE to an auditorium inside a Bosch manufacturing site. Four teams: Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Ukraine, Poland.

The competition quality was high overall, though Singapore was clearly the strongest team — a gap that the earlier rankings had already reflected. After several days of judging work, I can offer a brief assessment of the competition's strengths and weaknesses.
What IYPT Does Well
- The problems are genuinely interesting. They are open-ended, require self-imposed assumptions, and admit multiple valid approaches — the criterion is whether the conclusion is defensible, not whether there is a single correct answer. Most are grounded in high-school physics, meaning anyone willing to study carefully can engage with them. As a result, these problems travel: the same questions frequently appear at CUPT, and with modest adaptation at the S.-T. Yau Award, ISEF, and elsewhere.
- The format authentically models scientific discourse. The Reporter plays the role of the researcher presenting new findings; the Opponent plays the skeptical reviewer who has read the paper and found problems; the Reviewer synthesizes both into a journal-style assessment. This structure demands a genuinely high level of preparation — roughly half of all content is improvised, requiring teams to listen through accents, understand quickly, prepare targeted objections, identify weaknesses, and produce coherent real-time summaries.
- The competition is relatively fair. Multiple rounds, multiple judges, and a student-evaluation-of-judges mechanism make extreme outcomes unlikely. Compared with ISEF — where I still cannot fully explain how the scoring actually determines the nominations — IYPT has clearer and more trustworthy mechanics.
What Could Be Better
- Political factors. My co-judge and I both felt Ukraine's scores were somewhat inflated relative to their actual performance.
- Scoring and format design. Weighted judging scores and a partial Swiss-system format would both be improvements worth considering.
- Judge preparation. A pre-competition collective discussion of the problems, scoring criteria, and key evaluation considerations would raise consistency across the judging panel.

The final was genuinely compelling. Chinese Taipei's exit was a little unfortunate — they were competitive. Singapore's preparation, on the other hand, was extraordinary: a 200-page report (60 pages presented, 200 pages prepared), comprehensively outclassing all other teams in depth, breadth, and difficulty. The score gap was commensurate.
As one of the competitions MIT officially recommends as a priority, IYPT is worth pursuing. The domestic China track is not friendly — only five slots — but as the sole mainland Chinese judge at IYPT 2024, I can say the week was rewarding: new knowledge, new perspectives, and a significant amount of sweat.
