Three Big Ideas

Investigate (BI 1) — Explore materials, processes, and ideas through inquiry-driven art and design practice. Make (BI 2) — Create original work through iterative practice, experimentation, and revision. Present (BI 3) — Communicate the meaning and intent of your work through written responses and image curation.

AI prohibition (2024 CED update): The College Board's revised Artistic Integrity Agreement explicitly prohibits AI image generation, AI-assisted editing of submitted images, and AI-generated written text anywhere in the AP 3-D Art and Design portfolio. Violations are treated as academic dishonesty and result in score cancellation. This applies to all stages of the creative process.

Lower pass rate than 2-D and Drawing: AP 3-D Art and Design's 71.6% pass rate (3+) is about 12 percentage points lower than AP Drawing and AP 2-D Art and Design. This reflects two compounding factors: photographing 3-D work is harder than photographing 2-D work, and the synthesis between material, process, and idea is more cognitively demanding when working dimensionally. Both are addressable with preparation.

Section I · 60% of Score

Sustained Investigation.

The SI documents your year-long inquiry through 15 digital images and two written prompts (600 characters each). Each image also requires per-image metadata: materials, process, and size (100 characters max). The SI is 60% of your total score.

What to Submit

  • 15 digital images — mix of finished works and process documentation (work-in-progress, material tests, failed attempts)

Year-Long Timeline

September: explore inquiry territory, test materials. October: focus the inquiry question. November–February: intensive production, iterative making. March: culminating works. April: documentation photography and curation. Understanding that "sustained" means 40+ weeks of iterative making — not episodic production — is the conceptual core of the SI.

Common SI Errors

Section II · 40% of Score

Selected Works — with two-view requirement.

AP 3-D Art and Design Selected Works differs from the 2-D courses in one critical way: each of the 5 works must be photographed from two meaningful angles or viewpoints, producing 10 total images (5 works × 2 views). Each work also requires per-work written commentary identifying materials, processes, and ideas.

The second view must show something different. Readers have stated that a second view that is essentially a minor rotation of the first does not satisfy the requirement. The second view should reveal a different angle, an important detail, the interior, the back, or a relationship that the primary view cannot show. Think of the two views as together conveying what a person would see walking around the piece.

Common SW Errors

Documentation

Photographing 3-D work — what readers need to see.

Photography of 3-D work is harder than photographing 2-D work and is a significant source of preventable score loss in AP 3-D Art and Design. The goal is to communicate form, volume, surface quality, scale, and material texture through a 2-D image.

Lighting

Use three-point lighting for most 3-D work: a key light at 45° from the front-side, a fill light at lower intensity from the opposite side, and a rim/back light to separate the object from the background. Avoid flat overhead light (flattens form) and direct flash (flattens texture and creates hot spots). Raking side light reveals surface texture in ceramics and carved work.

Background

Use a clean, non-distracting background — seamless paper or fabric in neutral gray, white, or black. The background choice should not compete with the work. For work that requires an environmental context (site-specific installation, architectural model), document the work in its intended context as the primary view and use a clean-background shot for the secondary view.

View Selection

Choose view angles that reveal the work's most important spatial relationships. For the primary view: the angle that best shows the intended experience of the piece — often a 3/4 front view. For the secondary view: something meaningfully different — a top view, a detail of joinery or surface, the interior, or a view that reveals structural decisions invisible from the front.

Scale and Detail

Readers cannot feel the weight, texture, or scale of a 3-D work — the photograph must communicate these. Include a scale reference if size is conceptually significant (a hand, a common object beside the work). Use a close secondary view to document surface treatment, finish quality, joinery, or material texture that the full-view primary shot cannot show at adequate resolution.

Start With a Conceptual Question, Not a Material

The single most differentiating factor between 3-D portfolios that score 3 and those that score 4–5 is whether the inquiry is conceptually driven or material-driven. "Exploring ceramics" is not an inquiry. "How does controlled fracture in ceramic bisqueware communicate psychological rupture?" is an inquiry — it drives material choice, process decisions, and visual outcomes coherently.

Budget Time for Photography

Photographing 3-D work properly takes far more time than most students anticipate. For the SI, photograph every major stage — material tests, structural experiments, works-in-progress at multiple stages, completed pieces. For SW, plan a dedicated photography session with proper lighting setup for each of the 5 works. Rushed or poorly lit photography is among the most common sources of preventable score loss.

Use Written Commentary Strategically

The per-image metadata (SI) and per-work commentary (SW) are not just administrative fields — they are your opportunity to name the specific materials, processes, and ideas that readers may not see from the image alone. Precise language raises Row C scores. Vague language ("mixed media," "handmade," "explores identity") leaves scoring points on the table.

Coherence Across the Portfolio

Holistic scoring for SW rewards five works that feel like one sustained investigation, not five separate projects. Conceptual and material coherence across all five works — even if they use different media — tells readers that your artistic inquiry is genuinely sustained, not episodic. Works may originate from the SI or be independent; what matters is that together they demonstrate your highest level of synthesis.
